Most of the trucks, buses, and tractors in the United States use diesel fuel. Diesel fuel is a non-renewable fuel made from petroleum. Biodiesel is a renewable fuel that is made from vegetable oils, grease, and animal fats. Using biodiesel fuel produces less pollution than using petroleum diesel fuel. Any vehicle that operates on diesel fuel can use biodiesel.
Any diesel engine can use biodiesel at blend levels of 5% by volume (B5) or lower. A blend of 20% biodiesel with 80% petroleum diesel is known as B20.
Glycerine (Glycerol) is a simple polyol compound. It is almost colourless and a scentless, vicious liquid.
Being able to be produced from several other processes and feedstocks, glycerine is also a by-product in the biodiesel manufacturing process. Production of biodiesel in today’s time is through catalysed reaction and this very reaction splits the oil into biodiesel and glycerine. For every 100 pounds of biodiesel produced approximately 10 pounds of crude glycerine is created.
